The activation of Pettibon's viscerally gestural drawings is surprisingly less than compelling, or maybe just unnecessary. Given the action inherent in the works in their static form, it is easy to imagine their potential to engage when in motion, but instead of building on the frenetic energy in the drawings, Pettibon mutes and subdues it. The animation is simple and minimal; a butterfly hovers and flits for a bit against a solid ground, or an intimate scene of a couple switches to silhouette and then back again. The accumulation of information Pettibon offers is disorienting, and the picture he paints is fairly bleak. That said, the artist leaves room for the viewer to pull any variety of sentiments from the video, whether cynical, enthusiastic, or merely an aesthetic appreciation of his rough edges.
