THE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL | CHRIS ADRIAN
First published: 2006 | Takes place: Unspecified
In Chris Adrian's novel, Boston looks much like it does today. That is, until floodwaters seven miles deep submerge it completely.

The reason for the apocalypse? Parental neglect of the drunken, decadent variety, the kind that involves the barbed repartee and out-of-hand cocktail hours so well-documented in postwar American fiction: a brother and sister mistreated by their sophisticated, party-happy parents unwittingly channel their childhood suffering into Armageddon. SPOILER ALERT: The brother, who commits suicide, becomes an angel that helps destroy the world. The sister, who grows up and goes to medical school, carries the child that will lead the human race into its new incarnation.

The four angels of the Apocalypse gather at Children's Hospital while the rest of the filthy world is eradicated. The Longwood Avenue monolith, fitted with secret buttons and holy places by an angel and a world-famous architect, is the only edifice on Earth to survive the biblical flood. Arrogant doctors, frayed medical residents, and, of course, sick children bob along toward an uncertain future while enjoying unearthly delights.
