"JOHN O'REILLY: TWO KINDRED SPIRITS FEATURING WORK BY MARSDEN HARTLEY" | Howard Yezerski Gallery | October 14–November 15

Former MFA and Seattle Art Museum curator Trevor Fairbrother pairs Worcester artist John O'Reilly's recent collages with their inspiration — Marsden Hartley's '30s drawings of Gloucester's central, rocky wildlands called Dogtown. Hartley, a melancholy gay modernist, went to Gloucester as he was developing his late, roughhewn folksy style. In contrast, O'Reilly's collages are suave, romantic images of rocks, water, architectural ruins and male physiques concocted from vintage photos, art reproductions, his own photos, and gay porn.

Among the handsome Washington Street storefronts of AS220's renovated Mercantile Block building, with their neo-old-timey signs, is the residents' entrance to the building. It is against AS220's religion to leave any space empty that can be filled with art. So the lobby is the AS220 Resident Gallery, which occupants of the building take turns filling with their stuff.
