Despite these weird antics, I failed to find the show really funny. The dances often reminded me of Paul Taylor in one of his grotesque moods. But Taylor's characters dance through their awkwardness, as if deformity were a choreographic bonus. The characters in Oyster can't get past what hinders them. They carry on unflinching but unenthused. They feel sorry for themselves a little bit. The show has been touring since 1999; maybe it's lost its edge.
