Festival Ballet’s ‘Up Close, On Hope’

Vincent Brewer's Neighborhood Stories features Ricci, partnered by Brewer, with six other dancers portraying various characters in the neighborhood. Brewer incorporates moves from social dances of various cultures, plus many quotes from Broadway choreographers, prancing, knee-slapping, hip-swiveling, celebrating the diversity and the togetherness in a neighborhood.

Much more serious is Putrius's May There Someday Be Peace, set to John Williams and a narration by Hilary Chaplin based on the writings of an unknown Jewish prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp. Newcomers Elizabeth Mochizuki and Alex Lantz are excellent in their roles, she as the prisoner, he alternating between her captor and her dreamed-of nurturer. There are moments when he goosesteps or pulls her screaming into the prison and others when he enfolds her or supports her.
