Candita Clayton Studio, meanwhile, showcased two local photographers who continue to mine the classic Modernist black and white techniques of Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. Umbrellas were the key ingredient in the smashing abstractions in Wakefield artist Kristin Sollenberger's show "Precipitate" at Craftland in October. The recycled fabrics reinvigorated her catchy Modernist geometric flower or mandala or starburst designs with a glossy sheen and folksy touch. It was just one of the standout shows at Craftland this year — including the crisp Yankee Modern furniture by Warren's O&G Studio and Oregon artist Daria Tessler's fantasy drawings.

San Francisco's Alison Pebworth brought her road show of exquisitely painted, muckraking, magic realist banners to 186 Carpenter in October. From slavery to the devastation of Native Americans to Karl Rove and Dick Cheney, this was American history as a nightmare from which we're trying to awake.
