Rock and roll's clown prince was always fond of a joke — be it driving a Rolls Royce into a hotel swimming pool or hiding explosives in his double-barreled drum kit. He was also an incurable ham: witness his star turn as Uncle Ernie in the Who's Tommy, a masterpiece of slovenly booze-soaked lechery. He was funny and beloved, and when he wasn't passed out behind his "Pictures of Lily" drum kit, he was the best drummer in rock and roll.
