Such echoes are what Mankell is seeking to record here, the strange and enduring marks we leave on one another. It’s when these intimate interactions are being explored that The Man from Beijing comes most alive. But the author is also attempting to paint a bigger picture with this, his most ambitious book. Pity he brushes aside so many beautiful details in the process.
