MANSON H, WHITLOCK, TYPEWRITER DOCTOR, NEW HAVEN, CT, 2008.

2. The curators at the Beinecke, knowing my love affair with typewriters (I own three Olympias and an IBM Selectric II that’s collecting dust on the floor), urged me to make a portrait of Mr. Whitlock, whom I’ve since referred to as the Typewriter Doctor. Simply, that was his job. He’d been repairing typewriters, so he said, since around the late 1930s. So he must’ve learned his skill when just a kid! Anyway, he’s one of the last of his kind still doing what he does best. Thank God!
