BEER NOTES

RAVENOUS BREWING COMPANY, the new Woonsocket-based nanobrewery, had a successful debut of its well-received Coffee Milk Stout at the Autumnfest in Woonsocket; it's currently on tap at the What Cheer Tavern in Providence and at Ciro's and Vintage in Woonsocket . . . Two new beers are available in bombers in the Rhode Island market: ELEMENT BREWING of Millers Falls, MA (a little north of Amherst) has a highly regarded line; try Dark Element (a black ale) and Red Giant (a robust amber ale). And JUST BEER (formerly Buzzards Bay) of Westport, MA, has shipped a half-dozen styles, including Undrinkable (a sour black ale) and Horse-neck Golden IPA . . . More (limited edition) goodness from FOUNDERS is headed our way: BACKWOODS BASTARD, a potent (10.2% ABV) Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy, and BOLT CUTTER, a super-potent (15% ABV) English barleywine, will hit stores (and disappear just as quickly) any day now . . . 'Tis the season for fresh hop beers, made with hops that are harvested and shipped "wet" (undried) and added to the brew ASAP, when the oils are at the peak of their power. Two of the best are on the shelves now: SIERRA NEVADA'S NORTHERN HEMISPHERE HARVEST ALE (6.7% ABV, in 24-ounce bottles) and FOUNDERS' HARVEST ALE (6.5% ABV, in four-packs). Pick them up ASAP and get ready for layers of rich flavor . . . Due any day now from Sierra Nevada: their rapturously reviewed NARWHAL IMPERIAL STOUT (10.2% ABV) and the annual gift of CELEBRATION ALE (which would have been the perfect beer to open on Tuesday at 11:12 pm, but we settled for a Sixpoint Righteous Ale) . . . And if Beervana and the GIBF haven't exhausted your sampling needs, head to the BEER SUMMIT HARVEST FEST at the Park Plaza Castle in Boston, boasting 70 brewers and 200-plus beers, with a concentration on autumn offerings. It's on November 16 from 5:30- 9 pm and on the 17th at 12:30-4 pm and 5:30-9 ( $42.50, beersummit.com).
