Meet the medalists

Local winners at the Great International Beer Fest

On Friday, the 17th Annual Great International Beer & Cider Competition took place: 575 entries in 48 categories were assessed by 98 judges. And Rhode Island (and New England) brewers had a strong showing. Foolproof made a nice showing in its first year, winning gold for Barstool Golden Ale, and getting second-place honors for Raincloud Robust Porter and Revery Russian Imperial Stout. Grey Sail’s Flagship Ale got gold in the Cream Ale category, as it did in 2012, and the limited edition Ciel Rouge a Nuit won Sour & Wild Beer: German/Belgian Style. Revival Brewing’s Mercy Brown topped the Strong Beer: Old Ale division. And Trinity Brewhouse collected three silver medals for Prasada (Strong Beer: Belgian-Style Dark), Redrum Barrel Aged (Strong Beer: Other), and Imperial Pumpkin (Fruit & Spice: Belgian Style). Other semi-local award winners you should try: Mayflower’s Pale Ale (gold), Porter (gold), and Thanksgiving Ale (bronze); Element’s Plasma Sake IPA (silver for Gluten-Free Beer); and Boston Beer Co., aka Sam Adams, which won 13 medals for a wide range of brews (and two for Angry Orchard ciders). You can get the entire list at

On Saturday, more than 5500 beer fans attended two sessions at the Fest. As is often the case, the best beer we had was Ithaca’s Flower Power — which anchors the new Box of Hops, which includes three extra-hoppy (and potent) beers made exclusively for the set: the Creeker (a great double IPA), Dark Vine (a solid black IPA), and Double Zilla (a double red IPA). It’s a very limited release (only 10,000), so if you see one, don’t hesitate (it goes for about $24).
