Buying frozen or canned over fresh also allows you to get good quality produce regardless of season. If you want fried okra, buy frozen, because the okra-growing season ended months ago.

4. Make a list, and check it twice.
One of my biggest problems is overspending at the grocery store. I’m trying to live on a freelance musician and writer’s budget, and going grocery shopping without a list and a spending cap is asking for trouble. Give yourself a challenge in the New Year: shop smart. Set some limits for yourself, make some sacrifices, and say goodbye to overspending guilt and the post-holiday low-dough stress.

5. Embrace fearless food.
Take risks. Try new things. Seriously. One of my favorite things to do when I am looking for inspiration is to “window shop” at restaurants. Look at the menus, and see what the pros are doing. Then, when you take those ideas home, don’t try to do it their way, try it your way. Screw the cilantro. If you think it tastes like soap, then find something else to use. The Barefoot Contessa may have written many cookbooks, but she can’t know your food better than you do. Take recipes for what they are; one person’s suggestions about what tastes good to them. It’s your food: you be in control.
