37 things to do before finals

By CHRIS CONTI  |  January 27, 2011

Also on February 25, mashup party-masher Gregg Gillis — aka GIRL TALK — returns to Providence, with a rep for hosting one helluva party. File under: Fucking Bananas. Girl Talk recently released All Day, his fifth album, as a free download. MAX TUNDRA and JUNK CULTURE will join the fun. Tix are $25 in advance, and will likely sell out soon.

Happy 30th anniversary to NYC ska vets THE TOASTERS, who'll join Senior Discount for an early bird (and FREE) show on Saturday, February 26 at Club Hell (401.709.3923). Doors at 6 pm, and did we mention it's free?!

TERRIFIC TRIO Middle Brother.

SADDLE UP Those Darlins.
We're routinely spoiled by the numerous DEER TICK sightings (seemingly every other weekend at this point), and this time Mr. McCauley will team with Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes) and Matthew Vasquez (Delta Spirit) in the alt-country supergroup MIDDLE BROTHER, making a stop at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel on Friday, March 4. Deer Tick and DAWES will also play opening sets; tix are $22 in advance.

Just south of Downcity lies the hidden art/music space Firehouse 13 (tucked behind the Mickey D's off Broad Street, 401.270.1801), which will deliver another stellar lineup on Tuesday, March 29 with locals ATLANTIC THRILLS and JOE FLETCHER (make a point to grab Fletcher's latest, White Lighter) supporting TN roots 'n' blooze crew THOSE DARLINS.

Did you pick up the latest disc from DEFTONES? Diamond Eyes is solid from start to finish; the Sacto-based quintet will stop by Lupo's on Friday, May 6 with the DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN; tix are $29.50 in advance.

You won't find any death-defying triple-Black Diamond trails at YAWGOO VALLEY SKI & SPORTS PARK (401.294.3802, yawgoo.com), but it's the only ski park in Rhode Island, and the snow tubing park adds to the fun. And what's better than starting off a day on the slopes than coffee and doughnuts from Allie's on the way? Take advantage of the Monday-Wednesday all-day $20 lift ticket.

GET YOUR CLIMB ON The Rhode Island Rock Gym.

RHODE ISLAND ROCK GYM (100 Higginson Avenue, Lincoln, rockspotclimbing.com, 401.727.1704) is the only rohttp://www.kennedyplaza.org/skating-information/ck climbing facility in Rhode Island and, man, is the place huge. Get your bouldering fix with plenty of daily rate specials; on Friday and Sunday, bring your student ID for discounted deals from 7 pm to midnight.

Rhode Island is one of 11 states with DUCKPIN BOWLING alleys (spread out statewide, from Wickford to West Warwick to Warren), and a surefire way to entertain on the cheap. The bocce-sized balls can be flung by anyone with a heartbeat, and most lanes host Rock 'n' Bowl events on Friday and Saturday nights.

The SOVEREIGN BANK FAMILY SKATING CENTER at the Newport Yachting Center (skatenewport.com, 401.846.3018) offers weeknight specials, including a free skate session on Wednesday from 5 to 9 pm and the Friday adult only (18-plus) session from 9:30 to 11 pm for $5 (and skate rentals for $3)

The BANK OF AMERICA SKATING CENTER (providenceskating.com, 401.331.5544), located in the heart of Downcity, is a 14,000-square foot rink (double the size of NYC's Rockefeller Plaza rink) which is open through late March. Enjoy discounted rates every Wednesday on College Skate Night (6 to 10 pm, $3), or pick up a 12-2 pm Lunchtime Weekday Season Pass for $30.
