Comparative Literature: Revenge Fantasies

A survey and analysis of cultural representations of revenge, as depicted in literature over many centuries.

• Readings may include:

Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare, Oxford University Press, 2002.

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, Penguin Classics, 2003.

Carrie by Stephen King, Pocket Books, 2002.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Book One in the Millennium trilogy) by Stieg Larsson, Vintage Crime/Black Lizard, 2009.

Fury by Elizabeth Miles, Simon Pulse, 2011.

• Class discussions will be based on readings as well as television and film clips, including some from:

Revenge of the Nerds directed by Jeff Kanew, 1984.

Kill Bill: Volume 1 directed by Quentin Tarantino, 2003.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street directed by Tim Burton, 2007.

Pretty Little Liars (TV series) by multiple writers, 2010.

Revenge (TV series) created by Mike Kelley, 2011.

• Extra credit reading

"The Complicated Psychology of Revenge" by Eric Jaffe, in the Association for Psychological Science's Observer Volume 24, Number 8, October 2011.
