Social Sciences: The Truth is Out There

Introduction to the 9/11 Truth Movement, which calls for a new investigation into the attacks of September 11, 2001. Students will analyze widely accepted narratives of that day's events in comparison with alterative hypotheses and conflicting evidence, placing the movement in the context of conspiracy theories over time.

• Prerequisite reading is The 9/11 Commission Report by the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks, WW Norton & Company, 2004.

• These documentaries offer controversial takes on 9/11, offering solid introductions to the Truther universe.

Zeitgeist: The Movie, directed by Peter Joseph, 2007, zeitgeistmovie.com.

9/11: Explosive Evidence — Experts Speak Out, from the Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth, youtube.com/ae911truth.

• These two tomes offer wildly different takes on what happened on September 11, 2001; they both submit that there are still many unanswered questions about that day.

The New Pearl Harbor: Disturbing Questions about the Bush Administration and 9/11 by David Ray Griffin, Interlink Publishing, 2004.

The Eleventh Day: The Full Story of 9/11 and Osama Bin Laden by Anthony Summers and Robbyn Swan, Ballentine Books, 2011.

• These are three of the most highly regarded books about the political and psychological underpinnings of conspiracy theories through the years.

The Paranoid Style in American Politics by Richard Hofstadter, Knopf, 1965.

Enemies Within by Robert Alan Goldberg, Yale, 2001.

The Lincoln Murder Conspiracies by William Hanchett, University of Illinois, 1983.
