SURVIVAL TOOLS
Along with classic camping equipment — a tent, sleeping bags, tarps, and cold-weather clothes — there are specific items that are bound to come in handy in a disaster situation. No one wants to be caught without:
• AXE I was once told that an axe is the number-one most important survival tool. Get yours at any hardware store, or buy local and visit the Peavey Manufacturing Company, based in Eddington, Maine — in business since 1857, their axes start around $40 (peaveymfng.com).
• PARACORD Get 50 feet of this durable, lightweight rope for $5.95 at paracord.com.
• ULTIMATE DYNAMO SOLAR POWERED SURVIVAL RADIO There may be other good survival radios out there, but this one ($58.75; thereadystore.com) has the best name. Also, it includes a communicative radio, a cell-phone charger (and adaptor tips) "to keep yours juiced and ready for use," a light, a siren, and a power crank.
• FIREARMS Many preppers insist on being well-armed, with ammo on reserve for shooting and for bartering. This is a survivalist realm in itself, and if you've got a gun-lover on your list, a gift card to Cabela's or one of Southern Maine's several gun and archery centers might be in order.
