Keep yourself alive

Or if you prefer to whip up your own nutritious meals, you can snag local, fresh fruits and veggies at either of two PORTLAND FARMERS’ MARKETS (one is held in Monument Square on Wednesday mornings, the other is in Deering Oaks Park on Saturdays) until mid-October. Other places to stock up on healthy food include WILD OATS and WHOLE FOODS, both on Marginal Way, LOIS’ NATURAL MARKETPLACE on US Route 1 in Scarborough, and MAPLE’S ORGANICS on Forest Avenue if your cravings run toward the sweeter side. If you’re stuck eating dining hall grub, well, lucky you — you’ve got easy access to salad bars, made-to-order meals, and sushi, all in one place. The non-profit organization World’s Healthiest Foods is a great clearinghouse for food facts and recipes.

We won’t presume to know everyone’s preferred form of stress relief, but we hope that at least one of Portland’s cultural offerings will provide a welcome distraction (check out the Phoenix’s 8 DAYS A WEEK listings for our top picks) from term papers and tests. For peace of mind on the sexual-health front, visit PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF NORTHERN NEW ENGLAND, which has its Portland outpost at 970 Forest Ave.

And if all else fails, there’s always the modern version of the apple a day: VITAMIN WATER, Revive flavor (I swear I don’t get paid by Glaçeau). It’s the all-nighter’s antidote, and has helped me struggle through many a miserable morning.

Deirdre Fulton may just make it to work this morning, if she has gotten enough sleep. See if she did
