Which did you prefer, Godard or Truffaut?
You cannot imagine that I am going to answer that question. If I had to choose someone, I do not know that it would be one of them. As I have said, JLG makes cinema differently from the others. François makes films differently from the others, but with emotions that he tries to convey through a story, to have you make a mayonnaise of emotion. JLG asks why a story is necessary; the demonstration of not-like-the-others is also technique, he thinks.
IfBreathless were shot today, would it be easier because of the technological advancements inHD digital video? Or more difficult because of the corporate nature of contemporary filmmaking?
I think that for some years now television has made a lot of JLG and his way of doing things.
Do you see any young director working today who might have the same impact as Godard?
I have made some films with people who believe themselves to be Godard. It is necessary to have talent, but why not also genius and something to say? That is not a question that I ask myself.
