Review: Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore

Because the kiddies really need a spoof of Silence of the Lambs

Hard to believe it's been nearly 10 years since the release of Cats & Dogs, the CGI-propelled kiddie pleaser about the covert ops that go on between Fidos and felines under our human noses. If you missed C&D1, not to worry — few of the original cast are back.

The good news is that C&D2, directed by Brad Peyton, tolerably spoofs staples like 007 and TheSilence of the Lambs. The furball antics involve the villainous, hairless cat of the title (voiced by Bette Midler), who wants to terminate the bond between man and best friend. Diggs (James Marsden), a down-and-out German shepherd booted from police duty, is recruited to foil Kitty; much tail wagging and bird chasing ensues.

Nick Nolte, Christina Applegate, and Sean Hayes speak for the Purina-fed menagerie, but all that's likely to linger from the free-form fluff are questions from tots as to why dogs sniff each other's asses.

There's not much joy but there's plenty of noise of the rafter-rocking gospel singing variety in Tony Graff's musical dramedy.

For 50 years, Alvin and the Chipmunks have been driving parents nuts with their helium-infused banter and shrill bastardizations of pop music.

If Rod Lurie's errant remake of Straw Dogs didn't tickle your morbid fear of home invasion, then perhaps the latest from Joel Schumacher ( Falling Down ) might do the job.
