SOME PEOPLE FIND EVA'S LACK OF MATERNAL INSTINCT APPALLING. HOW DO YOU RELATE AS THE MOTHER OF TWINS? I was up for it; when my children were born I remember noticing how much I really liked them. I was relieved that I felt that way, which was a surprise to me, because I probably assumed that it would have come quite naturally. Something in my unconscious noticed that it might have gone the other way. That it was possible to look at your newborn child and not have that connection. And there are so many people who not only don't have that experience as parents, they also don't have that experience as children.
WHAT GREEK TRAGEDY WOULD YOU COMPARE IT TO? I think it's the Euripides that he never actually had the guts to write. Medea gets close, in a sense — that disconnect; the possibility of a mother actually being that far away from her child. What I had already identified in my own experience, before I read the book, that I thought was really worth looking at was this assumption that I would like them. When I first met them, I was really happy to have them, I mean, other than getting to grips with this mortality issue. . . .
IS MORTALITY WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU'RE PREGNANT? How can you not think about mortality? What else is there to think about? You're tied to the wheel. It's happening. You can't get out of this one. You're tied onto the genetic folderol. The die is cast. And I was up for it.
