Underworld Evolution

060127_inside_underworld.jpgIn the original Underworld, sexy latex-clad vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale) hunted werewolves in dingy subterranean enclaves while humans above went about their business unaware. That FX extravaganza ended with a duplicitous turn from Selene’s mentor (the always droll Bill Nighy), and that’s where Underworld Evolution picks up. There’s more ancient lore about the blood origins of vampires and lycanthropes and more convoluted twists that don’t amount to a pile of wolf poop until the daddy of all vamps (Tony Curran) and the über-werewolf (a CGI incarnation) team up and Selene and her human-lycan-vamp lover (a generic Scott Speedman) have to enforce the balance of power. Just what that balance is doesn’t matter; it’s all about dark sets, morphing special effects, and Kate looking supple and fierce. The moments of stilted melodrama serve only as placeholders. Just how did the talented Beckinsale get into such nonsense? Her husband, Len Wiseman, directs.

There's not much joy but there's plenty of noise of the rafter-rocking gospel singing variety in Tony Graff's musical dramedy.

  •   REVIEW: ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED  |  December 13, 2011
For 50 years, Alvin and the Chipmunks have been driving parents nuts with their helium-infused banter and shrill bastardizations of pop music.
  •   REVIEW: TRESPASS  |  October 13, 2011
If Rod Lurie's errant remake of Straw Dogs didn't tickle your morbid fear of home invasion, then perhaps the latest from Joel Schumacher ( Falling Down ) might do the job.
