Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny

For hardcore fans

I’m a Jack Black fan — let’s get that out of the way. I’m just not what you’d call hardcore. I’m familiar with Tenacious D, the self-described “greatest band in the world” that Black and Kyle Gass created for a six-episode HBO series, and the various CD releases and club dates (the duo play the Orpheum next week) that have fueled a cult following. That said, I’ve never actually seen the show, purchased any of their music, or ever set foot in a club. That last part’s not true, but neither is any of this film, the fitfully funny origin of “the D.” Things get rocking when young “JB” (Troy Gentile, a ringer for Black) angers his fundamentalist father (Meat Loaf) by playing the Devil’s music. Running away to Satan’s home (Hollywood), he pairs with “musical genius KG,” stumbling across a bevy of uncredited cameos (that’s John C. Reilly as Sasquatch) and the “biggest secret in the history of rock.” But is it “the greatest motion picture of all time”? Only if you’re hardcore.
