Review: Dance Flick

Genre-bending crap

VIDEO: The trailer for Dance Flick

The Wayanses, purveyors of raunch and sharp social commentary on race, have a long tradition of assailing the mainstream for rich comedic farce. Think back to the groundbreaking variety show In Living Color, or the Scary Movie franchise. But the new generation of Wayanses (director Damien Dante Wayans and star Damon Wayans Jr.) prove a big disappointment in this genre-bending crap.

Everything from Step Up to Hairspray gets sent up. Some of the gags work; most roll like a pickled sot trying to bust a move in "the pit."

On the plus side, there's Shoshana Bush, who calls to mind Anna Faris in her performance as the ditzy/sexy (strawberry) blonde trying to get into Juilliard. But nothing in the film equals the spirited show put on by the local dance troupe Funk Phenomenon, who pumped up the crowd prior to the screening I attended. Perhaps the new Wayanses could learn a thing or two from them.

If Rod Lurie's errant remake of Straw Dogs didn't tickle your morbid fear of home invasion, then perhaps the latest from Joel Schumacher ( Falling Down ) might do the job.
