Monster math

File N/N more under the “controlled chaos” of bands Chandanais grew up idolizing like Sonic Youth, Jawbox, and Hum, who are playing their hometown of Chicago on Memorial Day. “My girlfriend and I were planning on driving to Chicago for the show, but I couldn’t get the day off work,” Chandanais lamented while referring to Hum’s 1998 finale Downward Is Heavenward as having “the most profound effect on me, musically.”

Any pre-game rituals or gluttony to inspire these intricate compositions? “We don’t get drunk or high before practices or our shows, maybe a few beers before we get onstage, but we’re all about cigarettes, coffee, and energy drinks,” Brunetto said. “You can’t be stoned and think you will get through a song in 5/4 time smoothly.”
