If Therrien is the Game Boy's Master, then Marsala is certainly its Margarita, wailing siren tales of silly science ("Beam Me Up") and social dissatisfaction ("Leatherdaddies") to her 8-bit Muse. "I imagine that I'm Punky Brewster or something," she says. And with her heavenly mop of curls and freckles, she's not that far off. For Therrien, the honesty of pop music was a revelation in itself. "For me, composition became really asinine. It became a pursuit of one's own navel. You are trying to appease all of these academic interests, but the people that were actually listening to the music weren't involved at all."
So it's all about putting a lot of elements together and filtering them through this fun little device. Anyone who's played on a Game Boy knows how much spirit and soul there is in its virtual worlds. And for those who haven't, the music of the Game Boy is a new world unto itself.
