As bands like Belle & Sebastian and Mogwai continue to carry the torch, Teenage Fanclub are reaching beyond Glasgow. This year's Merge Records–released album Shadows — their first in five years — shows that their tastes have changed and the broth has changed, but it also shows that even though their lives have moved in different directions, they still find refuge in making music together. "Baby Lee" is a 12-string bubblegum ode to the girl you want to marry. "Into the City" is a travelogue chiming through some forgotten journey. Such songs suggest not a young group who've grown old but rather a group who have settled deeper into knowing what they want songs to be about and how they want them to make you feel. It's a gratifying turn for a humble band who never really broke in the United States and, when you come down to it, never really worried about that. "We only ever wanted to make a record," says Blake. "That was success for us."
