"It's a really exciting time right now, I get to play in two distinctly different bands, and the writing process has been going really well," Jones said. Did you catch Arcing's afternoon set at Foo Fest over the summer? Holy shit. Angular, primal magic. Catch, Art, Gus, and Hilary at Machines With Magnets on February 26. As for the ladies of Whore Paint, Meredith, Hilary, and vocalist Rebecca (of Made in Mexico) will release a new 7" within the next few months and plan to tour the East Coast this summer. "Fuck You, I'm Dead" and "Second Shift" sound like the second coming of Babes in Toyland.

Multi-instrumentalist composer (and former NASA technician) JOCIE ADAMS of the Low Anthem will celebrate her first solo album, Bed of Notions, with a release party at Firehouse 13 on January 21. Adams's vocals take flight on "Mary Mary," "Civility," and the title track, where she unleashes her inner Minnie Pearl. And we end with her world-renowned crew, THE LOW ANTHEM, and their third record, Smart Flesh (February 22 on Nonesuch). This one is a triumph, and we are genuinely honored to have witnessed some of the recording process last year. Ben, Jeff, Jocie, and newest member Mat must have employed the ghosts lingering inside their Central Falls recording lair (an abandoned pasta sauce factory), for Smart Flesh is warm, haunting, and captivating, and the album's third track, "Boeing 737," is an orchestral, window-rattling gem. TLA will return home for a (long sold out) gig this weekend at Lily Pads in Peace Dale; check out upcoming tour dates and pre-order Smart Flesh at thelowanthem.com.

The new EP by PVD trio Gertrude Atherton, Isle of Lost Skulls , is a gnarled beauty of a debut and proves to be well worth the wait. I have been eagerly anticipating this record since catching drummer Melanie Fuest, singer/guitarist Shannon Le Corre, and bassist Nicole Lagace in action a dozen or so times over the past year.
