Toby Keith, White Trash with Money
INSENSITIVE MEATHEAD REDNECK? At least he's got some tunes

Let’s click off the arguments against country superstar Toby Keith. 1) He’s the archenemy of the noble Dixie Chicks, who are fighting the good fight against the Bush regime. 2) With “Beer for My Horses,” he turned vigilantism into a rousing drinking-song duet with Willie Nelson. 3) He exploited 9/11 unabashedly with the angry anthem “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue.” White Trash won’t win over any haters, but it argues that if Keith’s an insensitive meathead redneck, he’s at least an insensitive meathead redneck with tunes and a voice. The album puts his sly baritone front and center, and that allows his sharp humor to come through on the working man’s revenge song “Get Drunk and Be Somebody.” His band mostly abandon country flourishes for straight-ahead rock and roll, the best example being the rousing “Note to Self.” Yet Keith is still Keith, and “Running Block” is a novelty tune about having sex with an overweight girl as a favor for a buddy.
