Simpson, who's a senior citizen himself, certainly knows how to get through to the elderly: you gotta talk to them on their level. You gotta appeal to their palpable hatred of modern culture, black people, and their own ungrateful grandchildren. You can't be afraid to sound like a SNL parody of Andy Rooney or a sit-com caricature of a cane-waving racist curmudgeon, because that's what seniors identify with. Most important, if you really want to be a populist, you cannot hesitate to sound utterly senile on national television.
