With their rep trending from Brighton to Jamaica Plain, around this time last year GSA holed up to cut an album. What started as an EP session evolved into much more. According to Subtex, "The tracks just started coming out as bangers," and Allston friends like Kate Smeal of Mornin' Old Sport lent their talents. The three must have burned some seriously sticky substances in their makeshift attic lab — their debut is a seamless synthesis, not to mention a unique take on rap and reality that douchebags might describe as morbidly postmodern.

"There was a point when Taj told us that we were making depressing music," says Subtex, whose complex rhymes enlighten, but also sting with paranoia. "Before that we didn't really realize it, but looking back we were definitely motivated by life sucking and things being kind of shitty. . . . I guess you could say that we find appeal in grey."

Outwrite concurs: "Everyone goes through bullshit, and if you're being honest and truthful about things, then people from all different walks of life will feel what you're doing. This year I was supposed to be married, and in a house, and instead I'm living with my buddies in Allston making fucking rap music and traveling around. Some people might not see what's great about that . . . but I have no choice — I only see the positive."
