Get Laid's fast hardcore draws from Elkind's vast range of influences — from '90s UK art-rock-inspired riot grrrls Huggy Bear to the crusty political '80s punk of Nausea and the grungy sounds of post-hardcore Kill Rock Stars band Unwound. Add to that the Cramps, Black Flag, and the early discographies of labels like Skull Control, Dischord, and SST. In short: not just riot grrrl.
"I dig a few of those riot grrrl bands but I really hate that classification," Elkind explains. "When we first started playing, people were like, 'You sound like the Red Ants' and 'You sound like Tilt.' We sound nothing like Tilt! When people think 'female-fronted' they say 'riot grrrl' because that's the only other classification they can pull out."
Elkind gets frustrated with the tired hardcore scene "pseudo-compliment" that "she 'can sing well for a girl.' " Especially on tour: "Playing in front of people you don't know is weird enough," she says. "Having people come up to you being like, 'You're a pretty good singer for a girl.' It just builds up. I think a lot more girls have been coming out recently and being completely forward about how they feel, writing songs about it, having friends back them, and starting really great projects. . . . There's been a really great mix of girls playing."
