Deer Tick continue to kick out spot-on Nirvana covers ("On a Plain" and "Serve the Servants" were both played at the Met shows), but McCauley is putting the critically-acclaimed Deervana thing to rest for now.

"We may resurrect that again someday, but for now that's all done," he said. "It got totally out of control, and I don't want that to overshadow the music we're making."

The future of super side project Middle Brother is up in the air, but the Diamond Rugs LP is in the can, featuring members of Los Lobos, Six Finger Satellite, Dead Confederate, and the Black Lips, along with DT members McCauley and keys/sax man Crowell. The album was recorded over the summer and McCauley projects a release by spring of 2012.

My girlfriend attended Blessed Sacrament (a private elementary school) with John, so I had to ask if their music teacher, Mrs. Martinez, lent any sort of influence or inspiration toward his career trajectory. A few minutes of laughter later and McCauley finally offered:

"Um, well, I don't really sing those nice, good-boy Christian songs anymore."

The new EP by PVD trio Gertrude Atherton, Isle of Lost Skulls , is a gnarled beauty of a debut and proves to be well worth the wait. I have been eagerly anticipating this record since catching drummer Melanie Fuest, singer/guitarist Shannon Le Corre, and bassist Nicole Lagace in action a dozen or so times over the past year.
