SPEEDY ORTIZ
CLICKY CLICKY | jbreitling.blogspot.com | There are many plausible reasons why you may be catching people singing to themselves lately, "I've got a boy in a hardcore band. . . . " But more likely than not, those conspicuous warblers don't have such a boy; they're just bewitched by Speedy Ortiz's unmercifully catchy recent single "Taylor Swift." The profile of the relatively new Northampton-based guitar band, fronted by former Quilty singer/guitarist Sadie Dupuis, has ballooned in 2012, supported by the aforementioned single and the newly minted Sports EP (self-released June 5). Both tout anxious guitar and bass, incisive coffee-and-cigarettes vocals, and a steadily torquing rhythm section. Between Dupuis's arresting alto and the group's talent for coiling and uncoiling a song to set off big melodic moments, Speedy Ortiz are rendering an indelible impression regionally. The band embark on a two-month national tour with a June 19 gig in Connecticut; America doesn't stand a chance.
