Not wanting to steal from our whiz-bang “Summer Preview” issue next week, the “Sibilance” staff will only (sort of) be discussing happenings outside of our fair state this week. Such as a big Maine punk show happening next month down at the legendary CBGB’s, which has announced it will close October 31. That’s right, you can head on down for a final look at the mother of all punk venues on July 29 and check out Covered in Bees, Sinferno, Big Coffin Hunters, Claymore Minds, and the Joe Mazzari Band while you’re at it. Sinferno are organizing three buses to take y’all down there, for just $50 round trip. Check www.myspace.com/sinferno for details. Note: The “Sibilance” staff once puked in a trash can at CBGB’s before being thrown out on our collective asses.
Though it hasn’t yet blossomed into what we’d consider a must-see festival, the New England Pop Music Festival isn’t ready to give up after their first two years. In year three, we think it’s high time the festival branched out and actually represented New England, though. Last year, quality Boston bands like Bleu, Mike Gent, and the Shods were the attractions, but there wasn’t a Mainer in the 18 bands that played over three nights. This year, the NEPMF will be held September 14 through 16 at the Abbey Lounge, in Somerville, Massachusetts. They’re accepting applications from interested bands at www.nepop.com. For the record, yes, the “Sibilance” staff is wary of festivals that ask bands to apply. Why doesn’t the festival “apply” for the bands’ services with some phone calls and checks?
Goth rapper Brzowski is getting out of town for a Canadian and West Coast tour. Show up at the White Heart June 10 to collect any money he might owe you before he’s gone for the summer.
Big news for BMP darling Emilia Dahlin: 1. She was selected to showcase at the North by Northeast Festival in Toronto this weekend (June 9). She’s bringing Adam Frederick and plays just before Mike Doughty. Unfortunately, the Press Herald says our dollar’s no good up there. 2. She’s been named one of 10 finalists in the Telluride Bluegrass Festival’s Troubadour Competition (no, she’s not in the least bluegrass). She’ll be flying out to Colorado to compete in round one June 15, with round two happening the next day should she make it that far. Winner plays the big stage alongside big-timers like Nickel Creek, John Prine, and the Decemberists. How sweet is Dahlin? She made sure to mention that other Mainers Jason Spooner and Vanessa Torres got honorable mentions from Telluride judges. Make sure not to miss Dahlin’s big CD-release gig coming up June 23 at SPACE, especially if you’re a Canadian, with your ultra-valuable Loonies.
