Boo City and Fall & Bounce strut their stuff

Get into the groove

BREAKING THROUGH Fall & Bounce.

Fall & Bounce and Boo City are two bands catching a pretty good buzz from 2012 debut albums, as well as acclaimed live shows (e.g., Boo City's set at this year's Foo Fest). The ladies often steal the show, with singer/songwriter Malyssa BellaRosa letting loose on F&B's Knickknack Avalanche, and the sultry sass of Tai Awolaju spicing up Boo City's Midnight Folklore. Both bands have high-profile gigs this weekend.

The seven tracks comprising Knickknack Avalanche ($7 at fallandbounce.bandcamp.com) are a solid starting point for the Providence-based quartet. There's a hazy cloud of '70s rock on opening cuts "Discard," "Crossroad," and "Headlines." Fall & Bounce bob and weave through multiple musical styles, with Christine Hauck (bass) and Jaime Craighead (drums) more than keeping the pace while guitarist Bill Reed kicks out riffs ranging from blues and acoustic ("Storm") to good old-fashioned crunchy grunge ("Stones" and Knickknack standout "Glory"). We get the sultrier side of BellaRosa on the excellent "Words Fall," then laugh along with the fun chug of "Drunk Txt," allowing the acclaimed singer to further strut her stuff. Just over one year in, the band has garnered some impressive regional awards, including Best Breakthrough Act in our 2012 Best Music Poll. The mash of musical influences is evident judging by the wide array of bills the band has shared with local acts including Psychedelic Clown Car, the Agents, Route .44, and Northern Lands — and they just landed an opening slot for '80s rockers Zebra in October at the Rock Junction in West Greenwich (tix at brownpapertickets.com). Fall & Bounce will debut some new tunes at Dusk this Friday, with two sharp openeers acts in tow.
