While Gabriel has 1986 and So on his mind lately, he was at first hesitant to revisit the album. "Well, first I thought it might be a bit of a pain, but I have to say I've quite enjoyed it." Part of what he is enjoying is looking back on material that the public really took and made their own: Exhibit A is the enduring legacy of slow-dance single "In Your Eyes." Written as an ode to the way that spirituality can bring us back, through instinct, from our selfish desires, its use in a pivotal scene of the 1989 film Say Anything transformed the song into a symbol of teen love for a generation and beyond. "It's amazing to me how many people living today owe their creation to that song. Or at least it was a background track, or a useful pickup tool. Sometimes someone will say to me that a track of mine, which maybe for me is associated with some really strong spiritual moments, was a wonderful song for getting laid to. So you know, music has many faces!"
