There were quiet moments, too, like Parks's beautiful intro to "Déjà Vu," a mix of jazz chording and simple descending scales. The finale was another "simple" form, "Kurt 1," a tocking 4/4 on Faulkner's snare rim, a theme of Wes Montgomery octaves, and the alternating current of major and minor chords.

I'm not sanguine when any jazz musician besides Sun Ra starts invoking the planets, but there were indeed some moments when this band was conjuring the music of the spheres.
