Music Seen at the Big Easy, June 18, 2007
By SONYA TOMLINSON | June 27, 2007
The Big Easy’s regular Monday night hip-hop open-mic night occasionally hosts bigger shows as well. (Slick Rick is coming in July. That’s huge.) Local marvel Mike Blast recently opened for Ohio rapper Blueprint. When Mike Blast enters a room it’s hard not to notice. He’s a large man with an equally large grin. This resonates when he steps on stage. It’s not only his size; it’s his pleasantly grimy (an oxymoron, I know) voice that when projected over a microphone attracts listeners at the crowded and noisy bar to pay attention, voluntarily. You could be in the bathroom stall and know when Blast gets on stage. Maybe it’s his energy-filled presence, or trademark phrases like, “Blast off,” or the more popular “Ooooooh,” which are so catchy that without fail several people in the crowd will echo him. It becomes this impromptu call and response, with each volley of “Ooooooh” getting larger and more resounding. Blast has come a long way since the early days at Stone Coast. His ability to capture a crowd and reel them in prior to his first song is key and he’s gotten good at it. You can catch him again on July 7, with Labseven, Boom Squad, and Brzowski at the Big Easy for the 7-7-7 show.
