PUTUMAYO PRESENTS AMERICANA

Gathering 12 “contemporary singer-songwriters” who “explore America’s rural musical roots,” this well-intentioned collection gives the impression that America’s musical history consists of polite coffeehouse country/bluegrass/folk tunes that wouldn’t rouse a sleepy
Prairie Home Companion
listener. By including New York City’s the Little Willies — a band who happen to have a singer named Norah Jones — Putumayo demonstrates that it’s not exactly beating the bushes for fresh talent. (And if playing it safe is the label’s intention, then there are some pretty obvious omissions, like Lucinda Williams and Ryan Adams.) Mulehead’s rough-voiced ballad “Frankie Lee” and Eliza Lynn’s piano-driven “Sing a New Song” have the kind of musical quirks that hint at something genuine. But most of what you’ll find here is about as appealing as the disc’s candy-colored cover, which has got to be in the running for one of the ugliest of the year.

Split personality
Jenny Scheinman is such an unassuming, modest musician that it’s easy to underestimate the radicalness of her two new CDs, Jenny Scheinman and Crossing the Field .
O, Canada!
You’d be forgiven for assuming that nothing’s been going on in Canada for the last few years beyond the interconnected shenanigans of that country’s indie-rock elite.
Border crossings
An in-demand sidewoman brings her own thing to Newport. Jenny Scheinman, "Into the Clearing" (mp3) Jenny Scheinman, "Tango for Luna" (mp3)
Goin’ Home: A Tribute to Fats Domino
This packed two-disc set gathers all the usual suspects and more for a Tipitina’s Foundation project to rebuild Domino’s Ninth Ward neighborhood in New Orleans.
Year in Jazz: Playing for keeps
Indie springs forward
For years we waited. And then we started making jokes about it. And then the jokes got old. So we waited some more. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, "Love Song No. 7" (mp3)
New Orleans notes
This year as last, the refrain at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival was: “We’re back.”
To “Brooklyn” and back
Laurel Brauns shows it’s positively de rigueur to employ a harem of guest musicians in crafting an album that’s perfectly cohesive.
Turn the beat around
I do a lot of thinking about music. Coincidentally or not, I have a lot of friends who don’t, but get a kick out of the fact that I do.

The year the music thrived
Bad times for the big guys have generally been good news for the rest of us.
