Sibilance starts now
By PORTLAND PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  March 19, 2008

Listen to XM50 this week for JASON SPOONER and his band, who recorded a “Loft Session” that will be aired March 20 at 3 pm, March 21 at 3 am (sweet time slot!), March 23 at noon, and March 31 at 1 am Other Loft-types this month include AIMEE MANN, MARC COHN, BEN LEE, and RICHARD THOMPSON, so that’s some pretty good company. Jason would have a listening party or something, but he’s in Austin for SXSW.

JEFF BEAM is quickly following his full-length Mind the Gap with a freely downloadable EP, The Bird Flew EP. You’ll recognize some Gap tunes turned acoustic, plus a couple brand-new tracks, live cuts, and a cover or two (it’s a long EP). He told us it’d be up by now, but we can’t find it. See what’s up at www.myspace.com/jeffbeamrocks.

Hey, MATT NEWBERG is back in town. Or, as he puts it, “I’m back from the dead.” We’re glad to hear he’s alive and kicking. He tells us to look for a new album of “lost” tracks that never quite materialized after a sort of album-deal fell through down south in Nashville. Maybe in April. Plus, he’s gigging again. Check www.mattnewberg.com for details and maybe some hints about a new band (SUGAR MOUNTAIN?).
