Lisa. Nora. Leslie. Lykke? As a category defined by its inoffensive prettiness has grown edgier, so, it seems, have the names. But not only does Lykke Li, Sweden’s hotly tipped bid for Starbucks stereoplay, pose the biggest pronunciation problem of any pop debutant since Björk, her Björn Yttling–produced debut,
Youth Novels
, one-ups the competition by being sillier, funkier, and less comfortable — more “Konichiwa Bitches” than Keren Ann. Whatever you think of Mr. Yttling’s band (with Peter and John), here he helps Lykke settle into natty lap-pop tracks that accommodate all the colors of the 22-year-old’s dusky voice.

may lull listeners with æthereal soundscapes, but cute it ain’t. And thank goodness. “Complaint Department” encourages self-absorption’s obverse, self-reliance, over a stern electro pulse; “My” suns up its sappy sentiments with Beach Boys harmonies. Peter Bjorn and John | Seaside Rock
It’s really pointless. And somewhat nice.
Pretty and slow

Turning up
Seven times during our 20-minute telephone conversation, Keren Ann Zeidel tells me some variation of “There are no rules.”
Bang Gang
The only thing wrong with Something Wrong is the band name: Bang Gang.
2008 Listravaganza Part 2
Everything you wanted to know about the year in music, in tidy lists of 10.
Lindtsrøm
As the first non-shitty half-hour-long song of the millennium, the title track and centerpiece marks a milestone of sorts.
Young Jeezy | The Recession
Remember, Jeezy disdains rappers, just like the teen movie anti-hero who decries the phoniness of movie stars.
Perhapst
To say he’s not a leading-man type is an understatement.
Power-surge pop
I was expecting a restrained, polite set from the super-hyped Swedish band Peter Bjorn and John.
Public-service announcements
How do you take a Web site and make it come alive?
Friendly Fires
The Hertfordshire trio’s debut full-length cobbles from some of dance rock’s silliest (and sappiest) party mavens, among them Talking Heads, Prince, and the Rapture.
