My
"greatest rapper" list reads differently from most. Ghostface Killah resides at the zenith, beside Rakim's throne, and Minneapolis truth agent Brother Ali — who recently toured with those two Gods, and whose
The Truth Is Here
is his second perfect disc in that many years — just earned a spot in my Top Five Alive column. Ali's 2007 divine rap masterpiece,
The Undisputed Truth
, was a theme album of sorts, taking us through the honest but bittersweet tribulations of an adopted albino MC whose positivity and talent carried him from poverty to proud working-class bliss.
This nine-track EP picks right up, with the MC who would rather die on his feet than live on his knees, standing tall in the wake of his ascent to the pinnacle of underground hip-hop. Once again, Atmosphere's producer half, Ant, delivers beats that are decisively contemporary but at the same time traditional enough for Ali to knock 'em down wild-style.
And why shouldn't he break out his tightest throwback bass jumps ("Talkin' My Shit"), his orchestral gracelands ("Palm the Joker"), and the sweetest piano loop since "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" ("Good Lord")? In rap music right now there's nobody worthier of the opportunity to bless them.

He's not a doctor . . .
Around this time four years ago, contemporary hip-hop tastemaker Dawaun Parker faced the same dilemma that most soon-to-be music-school grads negotiate: should he become a performer, a songwriter, or a barista?
Review: Jay-Z at TD Garden
There was something about the way Jay-Z hyped the crowd up at the start of show opener "Run This Town" that was not only emblematic of his performance style, but of his general appeal as a performer -- a key to his likability.
Shedding his skin
A few weeks ago, Boston MC Benny Blanco brought his homeboy J the S a flyer for a sketchy wrestling match in Long Island the next day.
Ol' Dirty's dirty side
Sometimes it takes an outsider to understand the inside.
Wu-Tang Clan's essential flavor
Fortune magazine once estimated that Michael Jordan has fueled our economy to the tune of $10 billion. Wu-Tang Clan are responsible for the careers of about that many MCs.
Review: The Roots of Hip-Hop
Everybody wants to claim hip-hop.
The bulletproof cred of M.O.P.
In their decade and a half as thug-rap ambassadors, Brooklyn's Mash Out Posse have made some moves that lesser outfits might have caught shit for.
P.O.S. | Never Better
P.O.S. must have known he had a near-classic on his claws with Never Better .
Beef stakes
In quality, record sales, and image, hip-hop has taken a savage beating in the past half-decade.
Due Dilla-gence
Extraordinarily missed Detroit beat stylist J Dilla (a/k/a Jay Dee) was righteously benevolent.
Clik tracks
Hide your naughty daughters and aspiring MC sons: Brooklyn’s Duck Down is that kingly retrofitted, incomparably propped hip-hop label that all of the boys and all of the girls are begging to fuck with.

You squint through the peephole: your expected visitor appears trustworthy enough, with a tech-chic denim-and-boots look. It's not like he's up to anything too sketchy — just trying to match you with a weed vaporizer fit for your lifestyle — so you invite him in and offer a seat.
