Davis invokes one of his heroes, John Cage, who denied the separation between “music” and the sounds of one’s environment. “As an ecologist, I like that idea. Because we’re not separated from anything.” We ponder that for a moment as we listen to the sounds of speeding tires on pavement from Beacon Street and the wind rustling the bamboo around us on the Aububon patio.
