October already!

Folk + blues + noise + alt-pop + Mr. Young
By PROVIDENCE PHOENIX STAFF  |  September 30, 2009
Only 11 weeks and counting of Christmas shopping remain, so head out to some budget-friendly shows in the meantime. Roomful of Blues piano man/guitarist TRAVIS COLBY steps out with his band at Two Jerks Pub (401.434.4111) in E.P. on THURSDAY (the 1st), and Cat’s in the Bucket has hip-hop on the docket with a CD compilation release show courtesy of Rhody imprint AUDIO LIQUOR ENTERTAINMENT (21+, $5 at the door, 401.722.0150). A busy night FRIDAY (the 2nd): Warwick alt-pop kids ROSE THEORY with Provy’s VUDU BEVY at the Blackstone (401.726.2181); Best Music Poll Blues Act champs WHALEBONE JACKSON at the Greenwich Hotel (401.884.4200); R&B vets BLACK & WHITE hit Oakland Beach in Warwick with a gig at the Carousel Grille (401.921.3430); husband-and-wife duo ATWATER-DONNELLY bring their acclaimed Celtic folk to the Peeptoad Coffeehouse (401.647.3105) in Foster; and AS220 hosts a blustery noise-rock affair with must-see instrumental trio NATURE/NURTURE, Boston’s EXUSAMWA, and FORGETTERS, led by former Jets To Brazil/Jawbreaker frontman Blake Schwarzenbach (401.831.9327). SATURDAY (the 3rd)  finds surf rockers THE FATHOMS playing a freebie at Nick-a-Nee’s (401.861.7290), genre-slashing outfit RHYTHMAFIA headline at Cat’s with BOGUS TRIZZY, and expert Neil Young tribute collective FOREVER YOUNG (featuring Becky Chace, Mark Cutler, and Dan Lilley, among others) hit the Knickerbocker in Westerly (401.596.4225). And feel free to buy me a beer or three if attending either of the DINOSAUR JR. shows at the Middle East in Cambridge on Friday and Saturday. And bring your earplugs. Trust me. Mellow out on WEDNESDAY (the 7th) at the Speakeasy inside Local 121 with Chicago acoustic crooner EDIE CAREY (fans of Sheryl Crow may wanna check her out; $10, 401.274.2121).
