• If you're looking for a little post-Christmas gift to yourself, you might want to check out the original recordings of LOVE, INC., one of Maine's first pop bands. MARC MAILHOT, the band's drummer, has released them for sale on his Web site, and they are only slightly cleaned up versions of what was originally recorded at EAB STUDIOS in Lewiston in April 1970. Songs include "Mary Beth," "Somewhere Went My Sunshine," the previously unreleased "Santa Fe," and "She Don't Care About Me," which charted in the Maine Top 10 in August of that year.
• CINDY BULLENS reports that the REFUGEES have commenced recording their second full-length. They've written five brand-new songs for the project (their last was basically re-recordings of the trio's solo works) and Bullens is promising one or two more. At the same time, Bullens is hard at work on a new solo disc, called Howling Trains and Barking Dogs, which will feature nine songs she co-wrote during her time in Nashville in the '90s, plus one brand-new tune. No word yet on release dates.
