Get MAD about local music

Attention Seekers
By SAM PFEIFLE  |  January 20, 2010

So, you know this woman MADgirl (real name: Meredith Alex)? She's got a studio/gallery at 275 Commercial Street in Portland and styles herself an "eco fashion designer," which means she designs snowboards and makes stuff out of other used stuff and her new gallery/retail operation, MADgirl World, will sell stuff by other eco artists, like recycled Barbie art. So you might want to check it out anyway.

But the newest idea is to create a "local music grotto," with mounted headphones and comfy chairs, wherein local CDs will be displayed and available for listening and sale. Gallery manager Virginia Walck wants you, local musician/band, to come into the gallery with three of your discs. She'll buy three for $10 a whack (for full-lengths; be reasonable for EPs), display one and do her best to sell the other two.

Genre? As long as it's local, they don't care.

"We really would love to have as many albums as we can," Walck insists. "We aren't really going to be selling the CDs for profit. We'll just buy and sell for cost." It wouldn't hurt, obviously, if you bought something else while you're in there, but "we're really not looking for a benefit on our own part. We're just trying to figure out a way to bring the community together, with the music and the fashion and the art and just have it be a community space. If people want to come in and hang out, by all means, we'd love that."

They'll be playing local music throughout the store at basically all times, as well, and if they sell both of the discs they have on hand for a certain band, they'll call up and ask for more.

MADgirl World is hoping to have a decent selection by February's First Friday, so get down there ASAP with some inventory. Store hours are Monday through Friday from noon to 6 pm, and Saturday by chance or appointment. Checkwww.madgirlworld.com for the backstory.
