• Tough news to hear about NICK CURRAN, the one-time NICK DANGER, who left Portland for Austin and has made some great jump-blues records: He's been diagnosed with tongue cancer and has been raising money for his treatment. Through ELECTRO GROOVE RECORDS he released a statement saying, "I think it's one of those life things that happens which reminds you not to take life for granted and help you become the best person you can. I've already changed a lot in a good way, and I really think this is gonna turn out to be a positive thing. This ain't what's gonna do me in. I am gonna kick this thing in the ass and then go out and kick some serious ass with my new record! I'm ready to conquer the world." That new record is Reform School Girl, to be released Feb. 16.

SUN GODS IN EXILE will be out of town for a while, first hitting the SMALL STONE RECORDS showcase at SXSW March 17, then touring the United Kingdom for six dates. They'll be bringing MARK LENNON of TWISTED ROOTS, filling in for his brother John, along with them for the Britain bit, but John will be in Austin in March.

• The LEFTOVERS' KURT BAKER says he'll be recording a new power-pop solo in LA at the beginning of March with LINUS OF HOLLYWOOD, who produced the recent Eager to Please, for OGLIO/CRAPPY RECORDS. No word on a release date.
