From carpenter to king

By AL DIAMON  |  December 8, 2010

At the Dirigo Blue Web site, commentator Bruce Bourgoine claimed Harring's presence on the transition team showed LePage "owes the tea party his governorship and fully intends to deliver on his pledge of dismantling government services, slashing taxes, and bowing to lopsided business interests."

At the White Noise Insanity site, the punctuation-impaired "Kay in Maine" called Harring "a right wing neck drooling knuckle dragging teabagger."

The most damning statement of Harring's that any of these firebrands could discover was a 2009 posting comparing liberals to Slinkys. "[T]hey're really good for nothing," he wrote. "But they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs."

OK, Harring isn't witty. He's also not well versed in the Constitution he claims to revere. And his policy proposals range from naïve to unworkable. In that, he's not very different from most politicians. Or drunks I meet in bars.

The other thing Harring isn't is an issue, at least not one that's going to sway the electorate. The average voter doesn't care if this guy is on the transition team. The average voter is too busy waiting to see if the new governor will produce what the Democrats failed to achieve over the last eight years: Positive results.

Everything else is just Slinkys down the stairs.

Is Pete the Carpenter related to the Carpenters, the worst musical duo in the history of the world, except for Milli Vanilli? E-mail evidence to aldiamon@herniahill.net.
