The music thumps loudly and steadily from a laptop at a table near the runway. The man with the headphones is Tim Naughton, who goes simply by the name "Face." Pointing to an image of a white mask on the front of the laptop, he explains that his specialty is blending in with a scene. Last year, he was at Killington Mountain, providing background for the Dew Tour snowboarding championships. Tomorrow, he may be onstage with a rock band at the Pelham, in Newport. Tonight it's about creating an atmosphere, he says. He'll throw in some sounds of wind and rain, steer clear of Britney Spears or classic rock, and stick with a variation on "minimal, progressive" house music.

"You don't want to totally take over," he says. "You want to the fashion to stand out."
