Several years ago the utility company National Grid spent $4.4 million to outfit transmission line towers in central Massachusetts with plastic spikes to prevent vultures from landing. It seems the birds were defecating on take off, to lighten the load of course, causing brief interruptions in service when the stream hit wires.
But despite the locals' efforts to push them away, the creatures are becoming an ever-more appropriate symbol for their community. In the movies, vultures always appear when the lost cowpoke's situation seems hopeless. Earlier this week, Mayor Leo Fontaine announced that Woonsocket could be facing bankruptcy.
